Is a garage roof suitable?
- Structure. The roof has to carry the weight. A new roof can be built with this in mind.
- Direction and shade. South, east or west facing roofs with little shade work best.
- Wiring. The garage needs a safe cable route to your home's consumer unit.
- Size. A small garage roof may take only a few panels.

Who installs the panels?
Choose an installer certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Certification is also what lets you apply for export payments under the Smart Export Guarantee. We are not a solar installer; if you ask for it, we can pass your details to a separate MCS-certified installer.
Money matters, kept simple
- Solar panels and batteries installed in homes currently carry 0% VAT in the UK, in place until 31 March 2027. Check the current rules before you order.
- The Smart Export Guarantee pays for surplus electricity you export, with rates set by each supplier.
- Some low-income households may qualify for support through schemes such as the Warm Homes Local Grant or ECO4. Eligibility depends on your circumstances; ask the installer or Birmingham City Council.
- Savings depend on your use, your tariff and your roof. Nobody can promise a figure without a proper survey.
Planning
Many domestic installs are permitted development, but outbuildings, listed buildings and conservation areas have their own rules. Check with the installer and Birmingham City Council.
