The short answer
The price depends on the size and shape of the roof, how easy it is to get to, and what happens to the waste. Always ask for a written, itemised quote after the contractor has seen photos or visited. Prices on this site are guides only; the contractor's written quote is what counts.
What affects the price of asbestos roof removal
- Roof area. A single garage is quicker than a double garage or a row of lock-ups.
- Access. A narrow drive, a roof against a boundary wall or no space for a skip all add time.
- Scaffold or access equipment. Safe access to the roof is a big part of the job and is not always optional.
- Condition of the sheets. Weathered, mossy or broken sheets need more care and more wrapping.
- Waste disposal. Asbestos cement has to be double wrapped, labelled and taken to a site that accepts it by a registered waste carrier.
- Timber and fascias. Rotten rafters or purlins found under the sheets may need repair.
- New roof or not. Removal only costs less than removal and a new roof, but doing both in one visit usually means one scaffold, not two.

Removal only, or removal and a new roof?
If you only want the asbestos gone, the roof is left open to the weather until something goes on. Most people want a new roof straight away. Asking for both in one quote is usually simpler and avoids paying for scaffold twice. See our page on removal and new roof.
How to compare quotes
- Is the quote in writing and itemised?
- Does it include scaffold, waste disposal and the new roof (if wanted)?
- Is the contractor a registered waste carrier? Ask for the number.
- Do they have public liability insurance? Ask for proof.
- Do they explain how they wet, remove and wrap the sheets?
